List of successful Western-themed video games

Here is a list of successful and/or popular video games set in the American frontier.

I decided to make this list as a reminder to what American frontier-themed media exists so that my game varies from them.

  • Red Dead Redemption (2010)

  • Red Dead Redemption II (2018)

  • Red Dead Revolver (2004)

  • Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath (2005)

  • Call of Juarez: The Gunslinger (2013)

  • Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood (2009)

  • Gun (2005)

  • Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare (2010)

  • Call of Juarez (2006)

  • Mad Dog McCree (1990)

  • Red Steel 2 (2010)

  • The Gunstringer (2011)

List of successful Western-themed games

I wrote this list up in my sketchbook to jog my memory of the Western games I have played, along with their time periods, mechanics, characters, game design, aesthetics and storylines.

As I mentioned in my reasoning for researching other existing Western (page 3)

-themed board games, it is good to remind yourself what similar media exists out there so your game doesn't become too similar.

I, personally, have played many Western-themed games and now have developed somewhat of a second nature and taste for these mediums. It is good to remind myself what works, what I enjoyed and what I could learn from these mediums.

I have a definitive list of all Western-themed media I have watched/played/read, and I may add this later on.
