Official Mechanic Design #2: Spirit's Journey: Fever Area

Original writing can be located on Pg. 25 of black sketchbook.

This is in response to the mechanic design questions set out in the introductory post in the 'mechanics' category.

Initially based on the idea of dramatically shifting temperatures in a hostile land. Combine that with an early idea of being a weakened human becoming sluggish, and this mechanic was essentially born.

After thinking up the idea of basing the game inside a human body, (Pg.4 of black sketchbook) and the 'player' travelling through a fever-inflicted area, the mechanic was developed.

I wanted to keep this idea about becoming sluggish under the heat of a fever, and I eventually investigated it more.

This was addressed when I answered the questions on where this section of the game would be based:

The lungs.

As the Spirit travels further and further, the tubes get ever narrower and hotter.

The fever area is located in the end of the Bronchioles, where the tubes get hotter and narrower.

The Spirit will:

  • Become extremely hot

  • Get very sluggish

  • Move a lot slower

  • The temperature will keep rising, making the movements even slower for the Spirit, and it may even start to crawl if time gets on too much

  • The tubes will get narrower

I plan for the above to be my mechanic.

  1. When the Spirit enters the end of the Bronchioles, the temperature will gradually begin to rise, until it is almost unbearable for it. The Spirit will go from moving normally, to slow, to sluggish, to crawling. Simply entering the Bronchioles will trigger this.

  2. N/A

  3. The Spirit will begin to move slower and it will be obvious, visually, to see that it is struggling with the rising temperature.

  4. - Temperature gauge, a developing mechanic, possibly in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

- Background colour of the level will gradually change from beige to red, and will keep getting even more red.

- Spirit's movements will require player to push much harder on the D-Pad or Sticks of controller, or whichever corresponding button it is for PC.

- Spirit will be visually struggling, and will seen to be 'evaporating' slightly.
