Introducing Phase 4: Creating a Honed Game Idea and a Rich Project Proposal (02/12/19 - 17/01/20)

Updated: Jan 12, 2020

All physical work on this topic can be found on page 17 of the black sketchbook, and pages 9 - 13 of the black backlog.

Phase 4 is equally as long as Phase 3, spanning four weeks from Monday the 02nd of December 2019 to the semester 1 hand-in on Friday the 17th January 2020.

Phase 3 was about refining several throwaway game ideas into one final idea to move forward with.

Phase 4 is the final stage in semester 1, where our main game ideas are fully developed and honed, and we create a full 'game project proposal' document. As well as this, we must create prototypes from our idea, to demonstrate how certain things would work in-situation.

To complete this phase, we must:

  • Create a fully finished, rich game project proposal document

  • Create prototypes, artefacts, concepts, mechanics and a visual style for our game

  • Decide where our game fits into the market, what platform(s) it will be played on, create the game's story and aesthetic

Presentations are over!

Phase 4

- Ask questions!

- Select one idea - create a honed piece

AIMS:

  • Create a rich game project proposal.

  • Can be any format, digital or physical

  • Market, platform, story, design, aesthetic, visuals

  • Play (testing & playing other games)

Now is a chance to create prototypes.

Present this at the end of Week 12 (10th January 2020) 3 term-time weeks. This must be done in full.

Evidence must be gathered, collated and packaged.

Create concepts

Understand mechanics

You must ask questions to finish the work in this semester.

- Things don't have to be finished but they must nearly be finished.

- Make artefacts

- Clear & consolidated

- Work out a schedule to write about.

Feedback on Idea #1:

  • Where does your game fit into the market?

  • Why would people want to play it? What's the USP?

  • Your game could be changed from a D&D setting by having 'selectable' character stories instead of set encounters

  • Rank up the ambition this semester, think about game jams

  • Take a research trip to Southampton CIC

  • Don't make your idea overly-complicated

Phase 4: Further Developing My Game Idea (10/12/2019)

Preface: This piece of work was created after I had a very long discussion about developing my main game idea with one of my lecturers. I had been planning to talk to him about this issue for some tim
